The bipartisan 9/11 commission recommended dozens of changes to information sharing and intelligence gathering. The war in Afghanistan initially focused the post-Sept. 11 military, while the Authorization for Use of Military Force kick-started the Global War on Terror. In these and other ways, the American response to the Sept. 11 attacks ushered in a new era of government. The United States continues to reckon with these effects, 20 years after the most devastating attack of its kind on American soil.
